En esta vida, one of the things I enjoy the most is good food (you can tell by just looking at me... haha!!). And following my grandparents advise: "cuando te mueres, todo se queda, solo te llevas lo vivido", so eating good food is one of the things you will take with you when that time comes. Or in other words... "nadie te quitara lo bailao" (comido in this case... hahaha!!!).
Anyway, the point is that yesterday we were in the city (San Francisco) and decided to have dinner somewhere but we didn't really know where. I called my friend S.Y. and asked him for the directions of an ice cream store I remembered his wife and her friends were talking about last time I visited them... I know! Ice cream is not dinner, but the idea was to find this ice cream store and then look around for a good place to have dinner before eating ice cream... of course! hahaha!!!
So, they recommended "Restaurant Inka - Fine Peruvian Cousine" in 3299 Mission St, but he also said "fuimos a Mi Lindo Peru y la comida no estaba buena"... well, that's good to know but I rather prefer to judge the food by myself. We tried to eat at the first place but there wasn't any table available, the waiting time was about 20 minutes and since we were hungry we decided to walk around the area and try other place.
Guess what! We ended up sitting at "Mi Lindo Peru" (3226 Mission St). I saw 3 good signs before walking in: nice atmosphere, most of the customers were latinos (tu sabes que a nosotros los latinos nos gusta la comida bien sazonada y sabrosa) and the owners are peruvian-japanese (in Peru, the peruvian-japanese colony has a good reputation of taking care of their businesses). Food was goooood (this is not a typo... haha!!), we ordered "Jalea" (first picture) and "Pescado al ajo" (second one), mine was a little bit greasy but not bad. Rice was well done, la salsa tartara perfecta, la chicha morada not that great but I don't blame them, it is really hard to get "real" maiz morado around here. Also, the service was good and the prices not that high for the amount of food you get, almost 50 bucks (including tax and tip) for the two of us. If you ask me I would say "if you are in the area go and eat there".
But this is not the end of the story, after that we headed to the ice cream store: Mitchel's. It was packed! Unbelievable! It took us more that 15 minutes to find a parking spot and almost half an hour to get our number called... it was around 9PM by the time we were in front of the counter (they are open till 11PM everyday). Let me put it in Sarah's own words: "you had such big smile after tasting the Lucuma ice cream"... Yes! I almost cried, it was amazing. I have been living all these years in California without having the pleasure of eating real Lucuma ice cream till yesterday. These guys are importing the fruit directly from Peru... simply WOW!!! You have to try it.
Yummy!
Mitchell's is my favorite ice cream place in SF! Always worth the parking search and the wait, in my opinion! It makes me so happy to know you found lucuma ice cream that tastes like Peru!
ReplyDeleteThere's a Peruvian restaurant in San Jose I read about yesterday - maybe it's worth a try the next time you're down for a visit?!:
